The Berlin Wall: A Self-Guided Audio Tour in the City Centre

Are you looking for a way to learn about the Berlin Wall without joining a tour group? Explore at your own pace with this affordable walking tour.

• Discover why the summer of 1989 was the beginning of the end of East Germany and why the small East German “trabi” car was so popular
• Hear from producer Jo Eckardt, who started her own tour company, A Friend in Berlin, in 2004
• Do it all in an hour or linger at stops along the way with complete control over when you start and finish
• Get unlimited use before your booking date and after it
• Use the virtual tour option at home

Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a ticket with instructions and a unique code listed under “Before You Go”. Then simply install the VoiceMap app and enter your code.

The app displays directions to the starting point, and when you’re in the right place, just pop in your headphones and tap start. VoiceMap has automatic GPS playback, with turn-by-turn directions. It also works offline.

Attention

You can download the tour anytime, before or after your booking date. It’s best to download the tour before you set off for the starting point.

This tour follows a set route and includes turn-by-turn directions. It works best if you start it in the right place and follow the directions from one location to the next. When the download completes, you’ll see a screen with a photo of the starting point and directions to it. The red start button will become active when you are at the starting point.

Places to stop along the way

If you're looking for a snack, the food courts of the Berlin Mall and the Potsdam Square Arkaden are nearby, as well as lots of cafés and restaurants around Checkpoint Charlie. You can visit several interesting places along the way, thus extending the tour by a couple of hours. Some possibilities: The film museum at Sony Center (there is an entrance fee), the Panorama Point on top of the Kollhoff building (fee), the Documentation Center of the Topography of Terror and/or its open air exhibition (both are free), the Panorama at Checkpoint Charlie or the Mauer Museum (both charge a fee).

Best time of day

Anytime. Between November and New Year there is a very busy Christmas Market but you'll still be able to find your way in between the various booths and candy stands.

Precautions

As always in Berlin, please be aware of the bicycle-paths! Don't walk there or you'll get yelled at, at best.
