In 60 minutes through Speicherstadt and Hafencity

When the weather is nice, thousands of people make pilgrimages through Hamburg's Speicherstadt and the Hafencity that is being built behind it. Understandable! Because this interplay between land and water, against the backdrop of the old reservoirs, is a special treat!

Hamburgers are proud of their Speicherstadt, which has contributed to the prosperity of its citizens for many years. As a World Heritage Site, it is also very special from an architectural point of view. But 130 years ago, when the first warehouses of this largest historic warehouse complex in Europe were built, things looked completely different: a medieval old town district with almost 26,000 inhabitants had to give way to warehouses. Since Hamburg became the customs territory of the German Empire, the Senate and the citizenry were forced to found a free port. Right in the middle of it was the residential area, which thus became

a port.

Millions of tons of cocoa and coffee, fine carpets, expensive spices and all sorts of general goods were stored here, but also refined and sorted. Crisscrossed by fleets and canals on which the so-called Schutenschubser once brought in the goods, this charming area is today home to a particularly large

number of museums and cafés.

The HafenCity

The Hafencity behind it is also being built on former port areas. This was, of course, just as controversial among Hamburgers as the warehouses once were. While some speak of a fascinating interplay between “tradition and modernity,” for others it is a district for the rich and famous. Opinions also differ widely on the modern, futuristic buildings built by the star architects

.

Hafencity also includes the Elbphilharmonie, a new landmark in Hamburg. Wonderful architecture, an optical pearl, so that the hassle of construction costs that had previously gone off the rails is now limited

.

During our tour, during which laughter and fun will not be neglected, we will make up our own mind. We explore the past and present of this area right on the Elbe without falling into black and white painting. We are also taking the Sandtor, Dallmann and Kaiserkai, the Magellan and Marco Polo Terraces, as well as

the new traditional shipping port.
