Volcanism in its purest state! We began our trip in the direction of Timanfaya National Park, including the “Route of the Volcanoes”. What today has become a symbol of Lanzarote, its volcanic nature full of
striking contrasts.Our excursion delves into the bowels of the “Timanfaya National Park” following the “Route of the Volcanoes” in which we see different types of craters combined by a vivid chromatism that reflects the origin of the eruption, the materials it emitted or even the intensity with which it exploded. We will verify the imprint of these eruptions that occurred almost 300 years ago by carrying out geothermal demonstrations, that is, we will verify the heat that still emanates from the Earth in different ways, all of them very spectacular
.Elsewhere in the “Timanfaya National Park”, we have the possibility of doing something that amuses both children and adults: “the camel ride” (*Optional).
Once we leave the National Park behind, the road takes us to the area known as “La Geria”, a peculiar wine area where a variety very typical of Lanzarote abounds, the “Malvasía”, a landscape so unique, that it sticks in our memories.
The vines are planted in cones formed in the lapilli, called “picón” in the Canary Islands, and which are protected by small dry stone walls. Fruit trees, such as fig trees, are also planted in the same way. This form of cultivation allows plants to root more easily in fertile soil, and the top layer of picón reduces water loss through evaporation. We continue our tour along the south coast of Lanzarote, to stop in the small coastal town of “El Golfo”. From this point, we take a pleasant walk to enter a spectacular volcano sculpted by the tides in which there is “El Charco de los Clicos”, a small lake with a deep green color that bears witness to the micro fauna that populates the waters of the island. (The adjective green comes from the color of its waters while the term “Clicos” is for an edible seafood that was common years ago in the area
, now extinct).Our route takes us for a short stretch to the south to contemplate the fantastic volcanic landscape in “Los Hervideros”, where lava takes on whimsical shapes, when still warm, it came into contact with the cold sea.
Also along the way we can see “the Janubio Salt Flats”, the largest in the Canary Islands and are still active today thanks to the support of the EU, which declared them a protected natural area. The lagoon where the salt flats are located was created by volcanic eruptions that erected a lava barrier between the sea and the lagoon that currently has a circumference of about 1000 m and an average depth of about
three meters.After these spectacular visits, we return to the road that takes us back to our hotel.
