Certosa di Padula

Our excursion

Departure from the hotel by GT bus. Arrival in Padula and visit the Certosa with an expert guide: it will be a unique experience to experience the Carthusian life up close

.

During the visit to the Certosa di Padula, the first thing you notice is the magnificent baroque façade framed by the various stables, workshops, cellars and even a pharmacy. Continuing on, it is possible to admire the cloister of the Foresteria, the chapels, the Church and the Sacristy. In particular, in the Church, the ancient altars are still preserved, which have polychrome scagliola decorations, embellished with some mother-of-pearl inserts. To make the Certosa even more precious, there are frescoes from the 16th and 18th centuries, precious majolica from the 18th century and choirs from

the 16th century.

Continuing on, you come across the bell room, the Chapter room and the Treasury room. Through the cloister of the ancient cemetery you reach the Founder's Chapel and the Refectory. Right here it is possible to immerse yourself for a few minutes in the typical atmosphere of the cuisine of the Carthusian monks. Followed by the Prior's Room and the very famous white marble spiral staircase leading to the large library of the Palace of Silence

.

You cannot visit the Certosa di Padula without being enchanted by the large cloister, one of the largest in the world. Completed towards the end of the 18th century, there are two orders of porches and 84 arches. A truly unique architectural structure of its kind

.

CERTOSA DI PADULA

The second largest charterhouse in Europe is here in Cilento

Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, the Certosa di San Lorenzo, also known as Certosa di Padula, is certainly one of the most beautiful places in the province of Salerno.

The

architectural style is almost predominantly Baroque, in fact there are very few surviving fourteenth-century traces. The complex has about 350 rooms and covers an area of 51,500 m², of which 15,000 are occupied only by the cloister, the largest in the world. The Certosa di San Lorenzo, thanks to its vast extension, is second only to the Charterhouse of Grenoble

in France.

The Certosa di Padula, the monastery.

It is possible to divide the architectural layout of the Certosa di Padula into two zones: the first includes the workplace while the second is the area where the monks live.
The structure of the Charterhouse, as with all other Carthusian monasteries, follows the Carthusian rule, that is, the rule that preaches work and contemplation. Precisely for this reason, in the Certosa there are different places for their implementation: the cloister, the library, where it is still possible to admire the floor made of Vietrese ceramic tiles, the chapel decorated with precious marbles, the large kitchen, the large wine cellars, the laundries and the neighboring fields where the fruits of the earth were cultivated for the livelihood

of the monks.

Although in the Church as in other places in the Certosa di Padula, the numerous empty spaces testify to the suppression of the Certosa by the French at the beginning of the 19th century, which caused the dispersion of numerous artistic treasures, the Certosa di Padula is a symbol of great architecture as well as of a great past.
