The Medieval Town of Kutna Hora: Private Day Trip from Prague

Explore the uniquely charming and medieval town of Kutna Hora (Diggable Mountain in English), an ancient silver mining town with quaint streets, stunning architecture and a historic centre that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for two churches in particular: St. Barbara’s and Our Lady at Sedlec.

On your private day trip from Prague, you will:

  • Travel between Prague and Kutna Hora in the comfort of a chauffeur-driven vehicle;
  • Visit the ornate yet macabre Sedlec Ossuary, the most prominent bone chapel in the world, decorated with 40,000 human bones;
  • Explore the magnificent Gothic cathedral of St Barbara – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site;
  • Learn about the town’s famous silver mining history and royal status;
  • Enjoy a walking tour of the Medieval atmospheric centre of Kutna Hora, with its cobbled streets and Gothic architecture;
  • Wander around the UNESCO "Italian court", and the Central Mint of Prague;
  • Stop for lunch at the Italian Court, where your guide will recommend their local haunts and local specialities;
  • Return to Prague with your guide, with drop-off at your preferred location.

Kutna Hora is a charming medieval town in Central Bohemia just 70 km from Prague. As the second most important town in the Bohemian kingdom after Prague, it enjoyed something of a golden era in the Middle Ages due to the success of its world-famous silver mines and royal patronage.

Nowadays, this cultural and architectural gem is one of the most visited UNESCO sites in Czechia – with a wonderfully atmospheric town centre lined with fabulous Gothic buildings, evocative of its wealthy past. Kutna Hora is also home to some genuinely magnificent Gothic architecture, which you’ll explore with expert commentary from your private guide.

On arriving in Kutna Hora you will visit three UNESCO heritage sites beginning with the magnificent Gothic cathedral Church of St Barbara, the patron saint of miners. Famous for its three-tent roof and flying buttresses, the cathedral’s frescos tell the history of the townspeople and the silver mines, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past and daily life in the Middle Ages.

You will also visit a unique cemetery beneath the Church of All Saints: known as an Ossuary or bone crypt, the Sedlec Chapel is decorated with between 40,000 – 70,000 human bones. The bones are believed to be the remains of those who perished during the Plague or in the Hussite wars. A macabre and fascinating interior design by any standards, this is the largest bone crypt in the world.

Afterwards, enjoy the fresh air and atmosphere of the medieval town as you wander down the cobbled streets towards the “Italian Court”, a grand palace once the home to visiting Bohemian kings, later the Royal Mint and today a museum to both.

Your guide will show you around this beautiful building, after which it will be time for a delicious local, leisurely lunch before returning to Prague.
